A cavity in the tooth (also known as caries) is caused by an accumulation of dental plaque and does not occur overnight. In many cases, it can be prevented by regular visits to the dental hygienist, but unfortunately this is not true in all cases.

How does a cavity form?
As you eat and drink throughout the day, dental plaque forms on the teeth. Dental plaque contains many bacteria that excrete acids. If the environment becomes too acidic, the hard tooth enamel may become porous. This can cause a cavity, also known as caries. When there is a hole in the enamel, it can spread to the dentin. In that case, it is advisable to have it treated as soon as possible.
Treatment
Sometimes a cavity is only in the enamel and then it can still become inactive. In that case, we keep a close eye on the cavity during semi-annual checkups (expectant policy).
In most cases, it is necessary to remove the caries and fill the gap and we will schedule an appointment for that. The treatment generally takes 30 minutes and in most cases you will be given an anesthetic first. Sometimes the cavity is superficial and then the dentist will consult with you about whether you need an anesthetic.
We fill the hole with composite, choosing a color to match your other teeth. Because of this, the filling is not visible after the treatment. Composite is cured right at the end of the treatment so the tooth can be used right away. We do recommend that you watch out with hot drinks and food while you are sedated. Since you have no feeling in that area, you won’t notice if you bite your tongue/cheek or get burned.
I unfortunately had several cavities and they were all treated painlessly! I was not bothered by anything after the treatments. I am very satisfied at Dental Practice the Wolvenstraat!

Kosten
Children up to 18 years are 100% insured for filling cavities under the basic insurance. If you have supplementary dental insurance, a filling is often partially or fully reimbursed. To find out if your insurance will cover a filling you can check if they cover V-codes. The rates of these codes can be found here.
